How to install Ubuntu along with Window 10 step by step

Pre-requirement :

  1. pre-installed window 10 System
  2. Pen drive 
  3. Rufus download
  4. Ubuntu download

1. Prepare Space for Ubuntu installation 



In the CLI type  diskmgmt.msc to open disk management. 

Right click on c and

select shrink volume


Note: prepare space according to Linux distribution. e.g. in Ubuntu, it is recommended to use 25 GB. Above screenshots are made just for demonstration purposes.


Now you will see an unallocated space on your hard disk.


Leave that space as we will install Ubuntu on that unallocated space.


2. Make a Bootable Pendrive


Install Rufus which you have downloaded from the above link provided in pre-requirement.


Now open Rufus




insert your Pendrive click on the marked area to choose the iso image of ubuntu.




click on start. then you will get a Pop-Up as below




click ok. then it will ask you to format your Pendrive.


click ok.  just wait for some time so that Rufus finishes making your Pendrive bootable.

3. Now install Ubuntu   

Reboot your system and instruct to boot from Pendrive.once, it will start booting you will see below a grub screen.

select Install Ubuntu and press Enter then you will have to customize your Ubuntu.

choose your installation language.



Now it will ask for update packages or install 3rd party application. leave them unchecked or you may choose... it's all your choice. click continue.



 Now it will ask you about installation type. single boot or dual boot.

In this post, we are doing the dual boot. To install it in Virtual box, you may see this or check "erase disk and install Ubuntu" and follow the below steps for the single boot.

For dual boot, follow the below image. choose something else and click on continue.




Now we have to create 3 partitions- root, home, and swap. but I will recommend making only 2 partitions- root and home. 

go to free space and hit  +  
icon to make any partions. follow below images

when finished, hit the install now button. a pop-up will open to inform you about swap space. ignore that and click on continue.


to confirm the changes made to disk, click on continue.


choose your location ... although it is auto detected.




then it will ask you for keyboard layout




Finally, it will ask about the user- who you are.



Then Ubuntu will start installing on your machine.




After downloading updates and copying new files, a Pop-Up will open stating -"Installation complete".




Now Restart your system. Now you will see below image screen.


Congratulations, your system is dual booted with Ubuntu and window 10.

when you want to use Ubuntu select Ubuntu and when you want to use window then select window boot manager.
